American intelligence sources indicated that the new Iranian leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, played a pivotal role in formulating the war and negotiation strategy, along with other high-level officials.
Recent American intelligence information presented by CNN reported that Mojtaba Khamenei is believed to have suffered injuries and burns.
Intelligence reports indicate that the actual authority within the Iranian regime, which is currently divided, is still unclear, but it is likely that Khamenei Jr. is working to manage negotiations with the United States with the aim of ending the war.
Khamenei has not appeared in public since he was seriously injured during an attack that killed his father, former guide Ali Khamenei, and a number of senior military leaders at the beginning of the war, which raised speculation about his health and his role in the Iranian leadership structure.
Mojtaba Khamenei was announced as the new guide of Iran, succeeding his father, days after the strike that struck him on February 28, but so far American intelligence has not been able to confirm his whereabouts, according to the sources.
One of the sources said, “Part of the uncertainty about the hierarchy of power in Iran stems from Khamenei not using any electronic devices to communicate, and limiting himself to interacting with those who can visit him in person, or by transmitting messages by people.”
He added, "Khamenei remains isolated, while he continues to receive treatment for his injuries, including severe burns on one side of his body that extended to his face, arm, torso, and leg."
The intelligence information that American officials know about Khamenei’s situation is based on assessments they obtained from parties that communicate with him personally.
But CNN indicated a different assessment, as a source familiar with the latest developments reported that there is evidence that Mojtaba Khamenei is “completely far from the decision-making process, and can only be reached rarely.”
As a result, senior Revolutionary Guard officials actually manage daily operations, in cooperation with Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqir Qalibaf, according to the American News Network.
Referring to Khamenei Jr., a second source familiar with US intelligence assessments said: “There is no indication that he is constantly issuing orders, but there is also no evidence to the contrary.”
CNN sources added, "Questions about Khamenei's health and his status within the Iranian regime pose a challenge to the Trump administration, as senior American officials continue to hint that it is unclear who now has the authority to negotiate to end the conflict."
